The Best Dog-Friendly Patios in Wicker Park, Chicago

Wicker Park might be the single most dog-dense square mile in Chicago. Walk down Damen on any Saturday afternoon between May and October and you'll see more frenchies than strollers. Every bar with patio square-footage knows this, and most have informally adopted dog-friendly rules — but 'dog-friendly' covers a lot of ground. Some places put a water bowl by the door and call it a day; others have shaded turf, treats behind the bar, and a staff that actually likes when you bring the dog. I've spent the last two summers eating, drinking, and chasing my pittie-mix Pickle around this neighborhood, and here's the honest ranked list.
1. The Map Room — the gold standard
The Map Room on Hoyne has, in my opinion, the best dog patio in the neighborhood. It's small, fenced, lined with planters, and the staff brings out a bowl of cold water before you even ask. It's also one of the only patios where I've never been hassled about Pickle's 60 pounds — the bouncer waved us straight in. The crowd skews regulars, which means everyone already knows everyone's dog by name, and nobody is going to film your dog with a phone two inches from its face. Beer selection is huge if that matters to you. Downside: only about eight tables outside, so weekend afternoons require a 20-minute wait.
2. Big Star — fast, loud, dog-positive
Big Star's massive corner patio at Damen and North is technically not 'dog-friendly' on paper, but in practice every server I've met treats dogs like VIPs. Tacos come out fast, margaritas come out faster, and there's enough open concrete that a medium-to-large dog isn't going to step on anyone. The catch: it's loud, it's crowded after 6pm, and skittish dogs hate it. If you have a chill lab who likes people-watching, it's perfect. If you have a reactive rescue, skip it.
3. Piece Pizza — underrated for big dogs
Piece's back patio is the answer to 'where can I take a 90-pound dog and not feel like I'm imposing?' The patio is huge, the tables are spaced, and they have an actual outdoor sink that staff uses to fill the dog bowls. Pizza is some of the best in the city. The garage doors are open in summer so the line between indoor and outdoor is blurry — sit at the back tables and you're effectively outside.
4. Estereo — for the small-dog crowd
Estereo's narrow front patio on Milwaukee is built for people who want a cocktail and a dog that fits in their lap. The tables are tiny and so is the patio, so don't bring a great dane. But the rum drinks are real, the music is good, and the staff is genuinely affectionate with small dogs.
5. Goose Island Brewhouse
Brewhouse-style spot with a long shaded patio. Water bowls available on request and staff is unfazed by dogs under any table. The pub food is fine, the IPAs are very good. Tends to be calmer than the Damen-corridor spots, which makes it a solid choice for a senior dog who needs a quiet afternoon.
6–9: Honorable mentions
- Forbidden Root — beautiful taproom with an open-front patio, dog-friendly but limited shade
- Emporium Arcade Bar — back patio is fine for chill dogs, but the music is loud
- Big Shoulders Coffee — daytime only, dogs welcome on the sidewalk seating, espresso is top-tier
- Cleo's Bar — divey, casual, dogs accepted at the outdoor picnic tables
What to bring
- A collapsible water bowl (most patios have bowls, but on a packed Saturday, yours is faster)
- A short leash, not a flexi — patio aisles are tight
- Treats for the inevitable other dog encounter
- A blanket or mat if your dog prefers their own spot
Tip: Chicago's official rule is that dogs can be on a patio if the establishment has a permit, the patio is fenced or separated from food prep, and the dog stays leashed. Most Wicker Park bars have the permit. If a venue says no, it's almost always staff preference, not law.
Weather considerations
Wicker Park concrete gets brutally hot in July and August. If the air temp is above 85°F and the patio is in direct sun, the ground will be too hot for paws within 20 minutes. Stick to shaded spots (Map Room, Piece's back patio) on the hottest days, or go before 11am or after 6pm. In the spring and fall, every patio on this list is essentially perfect.
