Miami Pet-Friendly Beach Rules: Where Dogs Are Actually Allowed

Miami's beaches are some of the most heavily-policed in the country when it comes to dogs. Most popular beaches — South Beach, Crandon, Haulover — explicitly prohibit dogs, and Miami Beach police actively enforce it. There are exactly two legal off-leash dog beaches in Miami-Dade County, plus a handful of dog-friendly parks. Here's the full breakdown so you don't end up with a $500 fine.
The two legal dog beaches
Hobie Beach (Virginia Key)
Hobie Beach on the Rickenbacker Causeway is the only true off-leash dog beach in Miami. Calm water (no waves), sandy bottom, plenty of shade trees. $5 toll for the causeway. Busy on weekends — get there before 10am. The water is shallow for a long way out, which is great for small dogs.
Haulover Beach (limited section)
Haulover has a small designated dog-friendly section at the north end. Less famous than Hobie, less crowded, but the section is small. Dogs must be on leash here, not off — the off-leash exception is only Hobie.
Where dogs are NOT allowed
- South Beach (entire stretch from 5th to 21st) — strictly enforced
- Crandon Park Beach — dogs banned
- Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park — dogs banned on beach, allowed in park
- Most of Miami Beach proper — leash law plus beach ban
Best dog-friendly parks in Miami
Amelia Earhart Park
Off-leash dog park with separate small and large dog sections, water features, and shaded picnic areas. Free entry on weekdays, $5 on weekends and holidays.
Tropical Park
Big off-leash area with a lake. Open dawn to dusk. Free. Most popular dog park in the county by attendance.
Maurice A. Ferré Park (Downtown)
Small off-leash run along the waterfront downtown. Convenient if you live in Brickell or downtown Miami.
Heat is the real issue
Miami concrete and sand routinely hit 130°F+ in summer. Even early morning visits to Hobie Beach can be uncomfortable for dogs by 10am. The sand-temperature rule: if your bare foot can't stand it for 10 seconds, your dog can't either. Plan for sunrise visits between June and September.
Tip: Salt water in volume is bad for dogs — it causes vomiting, dehydration, and in extreme cases salt poisoning. Bring fresh water to every beach visit and offer it every 15 minutes.
What to bring
- Fresh water and bowl (mandatory)
- A rinse-off jug or bottle — sand and salt come home with you otherwise
- Towel for the dog and a backup for the car seat
- Sunscreen for the dog's nose if it's a light-coated breed
- Pet-safe insect repellent — Miami sand fleas are real
