How to Prepare Your Cat for a Cat Cafe Visit

Cat at a cat cafe

Cat cafes are one of the fastest-growing pet social trends in the US. Many American cat cafes now host 'bring your own cat' meetup nights. But before you load your cat into a carrier and head out, there's important preparation involved.

Is Your Cat a Good Candidate?

The best candidates are cats who are comfortable being handled by strangers, don't stress during car rides, have positive experiences with new environments, and show curiosity rather than fear. If your cat hides when new people visit, a busy social event isn't ideal.

Heads up: Never bring a cat who has a history of aggression toward other cats or people to a group event. This is a safety issue for everyone.

Step-by-Step Preparation

1. Carrier Train Well in Advance

Leave the carrier open in your home weeks before with a comfortable blanket inside. Feed your cat near it and eventually inside it. By the day of the event, the carrier should feel like a safe familiar space.

2. Bring Familiar Scents

Bring a small blanket with your scent and a toy from home. Some owners use Feliway pheromone spray inside the carrier 15 minutes before travel.

3. Keep Vaccinations Current

Any reputable cat cafe meetup will require proof of up-to-date vaccinations — at minimum rabies and FVRCP. Have your vet records handy.

4. Arrive Early and Let Your Cat Adjust

Set the carrier down in a quiet corner and let your cat observe for 10–15 minutes. Let your cat choose when to come out — never force them.

5. Watch Your Cat's Body Language

Flattened ears, dilated pupils, low crouched posture, or hissing mean it's time to go. Respect your cat's signals immediately.

Tip: Harness-train your cat before the event. A well-fitted harness gives your cat freedom to explore while keeping them safely under control.
